Piano, b.1932, Los Angeles, CA – Florence is a jazz arranger and pianist born in Los Angeles on May 20, 1932. He began taking piano lessons at five and initially intended to be a concert pianist. However on taking classes with Bob McDonald he changed direction toward jazz. By the mid-1950s he formed his own big band. In 2000 he won a Grammy Award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album. Bagpipes, b.1936, Raleigh, NC, d. July 31, 2006 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – Harley was an American jazz musician of mixed Cherokee and African ancestry, known primarily as the first jazz musician to adopt the Scottish great Highland bagpipe as his primary instrument.
Although born near Raleigh, North Carolina, at an early age Harley moved with his mother to a poor neighbourhood in North Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He began playing the C melody saxophone at age 12, and also played trumpet. At the age of 22, he began studying saxophone, flute, oboe, and clarinet with Dennis Sandole (1913-2000), an Italian American jazz guitarist who also taught several other Philadelphia jazz musicians. The son of popular carpero composer and instrumentalist Cayetano Saluzzi, Dino played the bandoneon since his childhood. Other than his father, he was influenced by Salta musicians such as Cuchi Leguizamón, and by the lyrical strain of the tango of Francisco de Caro and Agustin Bardi.
