It bodes well this day in the Jazz Capital of Africa, looks like it’s going to be a beautiful day in the Mother City of Cape Town. I’ve not consulted any of the weather guru’s so I believe it’s gonna be a real goodie. A day to take a walk along the Sea Point Promenade or through the Kirstenbosch Gardens with you smart phone tuned into All Jazz Radio online, taking a tea break all the while enjoying great jazz. Mind you no matter where one finds oneself in the global village the same suggestion applies, nice thought huh, take the time for yourself today.

This week I’ve again been disappointed and lost some more faith in Cape Town musicians. Having arranged an interview with a prominent Cape Town musician on Monday only to be phoned by his “manager” to say he’s too tired to come in after a hectic weekend. I was asked if he could come at the same time the following day, duly arranged and agreed. The appointed time comes and goes, again no show and no phone call at all the time. Am I pissed off, oh yes, its something that happens all too often with Cape Town and South African musicians. What can be done, I don’t know we as radio try to promote their work and these people, “managers” and artists alike are so wrapped up in their own self-importance showing little regard for etiquette, time keeping and respect. It’s just plain rude and indicative of society as a whole, protocols forgotten, word spreads to others and leads to opportunities wasted and pushed to the back of the queue and being declined next time its a real state of affairs in the small world of South African Jazz today.

Quote of the Day

As far as playing jazz, no other art form, other than conversation, can give the satisfaction of spontaneous interaction.
