Nicky Schrire is a London-born, South African-raised vocalist and composer. After living in New York for five years she recently returned to live in London. Praised by All About Jazz for her “warm and supple instrument that serves as a dispensary of emotional power,” her 2012 debut album Freedom Flight was released to critical acclaim. Her 2013 sophomore release Space And Time features duets with pianists Gerald Clayton, Gil Goldstein and Fabian Almazan. Journalists called the album “breathtaking, stop-you-in-your-tracks stuff…an intimate stunner” (All About Jazz), and “fifty minutes of emotionally eventful, richly crafted music” (Ottawa Citizen).
Schrire graduated from the South African College of Music, UCT, where she worked alongside artists such Sibongile Khumalo, Arno Carstens and Abdullah Ibrahim. She then went on to earn a Master of Music Degree from the Manhattan School of Music under the tutelage of Peter Eldridge and Dave Liebman.
Schrire’s work has given rise to comparisons to artists such as Norma Winstone, Tori Amos and Joni Mitchell, among others. Her first originals-only EP To The Spring was released in March 2014 and features pianist Fabian Almazan and bassist Desmond White. Journalist Jon Garelick wrote, “though Schrire’s approach has earned her comparisons to Gretchen Parlato and Becca Stevens, the similarities are superficial. Like Parlato, she’s an assured technician with a whole bag of impressive tricks. Like Stevens and, for that matter, Esperanza Spalding, she has an affinity for folk. But…she’s got her own thing, and it’s very much worth listening to.”
Schrire has led her quartet in performances in New York (55Bar, the Kitano, 92Y), Boston (Scullers Jazz Club), Los Angeles (Blue Whale), London (The Forge), Dublin (National Concert Hall), and South Africa (Standard Bank Youth Jazz Festival). Often praised for her choice of repertoire, Hardbop Jazz Journal described her as “clever and understated” while FAME noted that “a number of the more and most intelligent female vocalists come to mind-Tori Amos, Norma Winstone, Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, etc.-in Schrire’s work.”
